Gifting to a Lakota native American

Gifting to a Lakota native American

A Comment found on one of my teaching blog posts.

What would be a good gift to give a Lakota native American in exchange for a feather and sage he gave me? I was thinking an elk shed?

Native American gift protocol

Welcome and thank you to the Anonymous visitor and for your question.

First please understand that I am not Lakota and pray that you will be able to find a Lakota Elder in your area.

I also do not know why you received an Eagle feather?
Guessing that it was an Eagle?

That said, a proper gift, in my tribe, would always be tobacco (Kinnick, Kinnick).

One could only hope that you backed away in respect and humility after receiving your gift?
This should suffice for any true traditional gift giver.
However, if you still feel the need to give your gift, Kinnick, Kinnick is always the correct answer from me.

Why does smudging get rid of spirits?

GREAT QUESTION!

From

Mississauga Ontario Canada

Welcome to the visitor to one of my old websites and my new blog posting.

I believe that this has to be the best question of the year, we had many good questions this year.
Remembering my Grandfathers teaching, "the only dumb question is the one that you think to ask however never ask".

The answer to this question is a simple one " Smudging can do nothing except maybe make one sneeze, Your faith in Creator in do this smudging while in prayer to Creator can move mountains for you if necessary"!

It is good to see people helping our casino recognized brother and sister tribes however, I believe that it is also time for this government to rethink tribes that we have so badly abused, assimilated or ignored in the past!

Up until the early 1980’s each tribe in Indian country united as one, the government tried so hard to show nice to each tribe that we actually ripped most of them apart!

Let us take my people for instance, then multiply this by thousands.

The government wanted to recognize the Mohegan tribe, a few of the tribe wanted a reservation, the government also wanted to do away with some land now made useless by the United Nuclear corporation testing their nuclear power plants being built for our navy, alas any tribal member voting for this land as a reservation would become recognized by the government, the rest would fall by the wayside!

Now we have some 7 or 8 Mohegan tribes?

The Pequot land was vacant for many years until the then Mohegan tribe of the 1960’s took control, now we have some government casino Pequot's alive and living on the land?

We may choose not to recognize these people however, we do need to help them!

What is all of the fuss about?

New Huck Finn Eliminates Offensive Words

What is all of the fuss about?

People change words all of the time while rewriting a book, a movie or a play, no one seems to care.

I believe that every race of people will stop the use of the “N” word as soon as the African Americans stop the use of the “N” word.

As for the Injun thing, I think that to be a joke on any European, dressed as a look-a-like Native American, playing a dumb roll.

Like with the “N” word, every race of people may stop the use of the “Indian” word as soon as the Native Americans stop the use of the word Indian!

I do object to an Italian playing a Native American in movies and using the word Indian however, one does understand that Columbus couldn’t get it right why should his People?
