“10.6 Million Jobs”/"terminate the tax,"

What is the federal payroll tax for Social Security Medicare trump wants to slash?

Payroll taxes are taken from both employers and workers to help fund government programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Currently, employers and workers each pay 6.2% towards Social Security, or 12.4% total. The Social Security payroll tax phases out for incomes above $137,700.

trump's 10.6 Million Jobs Stat Masks a Complex, Weak Unemployment Picture

Fact check:

trump doesn’t outperform other presidents despite 2 months of strong job gains

Katie LandeckUSA TODAY

The unemployment rate now is11.1%. In April, it was 14.7%, dropping in May to 13.3%. To put that in perspective, the unemployment rate spiked at 10% during the Great Recession and 10.8% in June 1983. And despite jobs regained, the country is still down nearly 15 million jobs compared to February.

The number in the claim “no president in American history averaged higher than 224,000 jobs in one month” may come from a CNN report in February that examines Trump and former President Barack Obama's jobs numbers. It compares Trump's first three years in office with Obama's final three years, finding that employers added an average 224,000 jobs in those Obama years.

What's True

On Aug. 8, 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump said he intended to "terminate the tax," referring to Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes. It's a step that would — if taken in isolation — remove nearly 90% of funding for Social Security benefits, and thus likely pose a threat to the continued existence of those programs.

What's False

In the same remarks, Trump also articulated different and conflicting plans for payroll taxes, saying variously that he would forgive four months' worth of deferred payroll tax obligations, that he would extend the deferral of payroll tax obligations, and that he would permanently "cut" payroll taxes.

What's Undetermined

It's unknown whether Trump had a plan to replace the shortfall in Social Security funding in the event that he eliminated payroll taxes.

Happy Rosh Hashanah to my many Hebrew friends

Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year" and is referred to in the Book of Leviticus 23:24-25 as "a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts". A shofar, an ancient musical horn, is still blown during services at the synagogue.

Leviticus 23:24

24  Speak to B’nei Yisrael thus: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe complete rest, a sacred occasion commemorated with loud blasts.

Africans were not the first to be slaves!

In 1492 the ‘Spanish’ the first enslaved Indians in the ‘New World’!

On August 20, 1619, “20 and odd” Angolans, kidnapped by the Portuguese, arrive in the British colony of Virginia and are then bought by English colonists. The arrival of the enslaved Africans in the New World marks a beginning of two and a half centuries of slavery in North America. Founded at Jamestown in 1607, the Virginia Colony was home to about 700 people by 1619. The first enslaved Africans to arrive there disembarked at Point Comfort, in what is today known as Hampton Roads. Most of their names, as well as the exact number who remained at Point Comfort, have been lost to history, but much is known about their journey.

The Spanish Age of Exploration began when Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492.

In 1494 all of the lands in the New World were claimed by Spain and the Spanish

The first Dutch settlement in the Americas was founded in 1615: Fort Nassau, on Castle Island along the Hudson, near present-day Albany. The settlement served mostly as an outpost for trading in fur with the native Lenape tribes people, but was later replaced by Fort Orange. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_colonization_of_the_Americas#:~:text=After%20some%20early%20trading%20expeditions%2C%20the%20first%20Dutch,tribespeople%2C%20but%20was%20later%20replaced%20by%20Fort%20Orange.

It was 400 years ago, “about the latter end of August,” that an English privateer ship reached Point Comfort on the Virginia peninsula. There, Governor George Yeardley and his head of trade, Cape Merchant Abraham Piersey, bought the “20. and odd Negroes” aboard in exchange for “victuals” — meaning, they traded food for slaves.
