Violence Against Women Act

Rape is Rape no matter who is raped or where rape happens?

A watered down bill called the Violence Against Women Act has passed through the house. Big deal! I guess it is better than nothing?

"Provisions in the VAWA allow tribal courts to arrest and prosecute non-Natives who are accused of abusing Native women on reservations". The “possible” imprisonment of non-natives by tribal courts is a major sticking point, especially when the Department of Justice reports more than 85 percent of violent crimes against Indian women are committed by non-Indians. Though the bill permits non-natives to move their cases to federal court if they don't feel their Constitutional rights are being upheld, Big deal!

If non-natives go to any country and abuses and/or rape's a citizen of that country, they are prosecuted to the full extent of their laws!

Two American Sailors were tried and convicted in a court of law in Japan for rape and robbery, as will they should have been however, for hundreds of years non-natives have gone onto native land abusing and raping native women knowing full well that they would not be punished. This watered down law may or may not help our native women? How about the Catholic Priest that are raping young boys?

Rape is still Rape?

What's the problem with this, our free country, allowing all of the people to be free?

CIRCLE of LIFE?

What is this circle of life question that keeps coming up on my trackers?

I, as have many people, posted about this subject a few times however, it is still the number one question of the trackers?

I can only speak as a traditionalist elder and from teaching from my elders from the New England area.

Our circle of life started long ago while (Creator) and (Father Sky) were on one of their walks around, what we now call the universe, which was already a circle of life in of its self.

Each time they passed this, a circle of water, they paused with pride in its beauty. On one of those trips there was an agreement to speak with (Turtle Woman) about an addition for this circle of water. About going down to this circle of water and become what we now call land (Mother Earth). Mother Earth asked and received children to care for as part of this agreement, then became the mother of all creation on this new circle. We (Humans) are but a member of this creation, at no time did Creator, Father Sky or Mother Earth call us the Top of the Food Chain? Humans are but a small piece of this circle so, if we were to take away all of our weapons then see how we make out in a fight with those animals that we call our food chain?

Creator and Father Sky still circle around this universe, Mother Earth still turns in a circle and still circles around our sun which still circles around in this universe. Creation is a circle from birth (life) young growth, age and death, a circle of life.

Native American circle of life meaning.

The Circle is the oldest symbol of the world. The Circle is a reminder of our connections to Mother Earth. The sun, mood and planets travel in circles. The Circle is the symbol. Our drums are circles and the heartbeat of all people. Our gatherings, powwows and Paw-paus are held in a circle. the four corners and four directions ceremonies are through a circle. Without this circle there would be no life.

Walking the grounds of our ancestors

To the new group of occupants of this country this posting might seem a little on the distasteful side? Please remember while reading that our people lived on this land for a very long time before first contact and that soon after first contact many of the people no longer existed and if we do our numbers are small and most are now mixed blood. Nothing wrong with mixed blood, I am one. If you ask a true Spiritual leader when he/she feels the most satisfaction after a ceremony? Most if not all will say at a burial grounds of the ancestors after a crossing ceremony. Many people gather at a birth, naming, wedding, funeral and so on however, when finding a sacred grounds and find that those ancestors may have been resting until you show, it is a must do, to get a gathering and help them home!

While on my trip up north (Jacksonville) and finding little information about a very large tribe of Native Americans that lived on the island (the Timucuan and Yulee Indians) for many thousands of years and finding no burial grounds? I started thinking back to my younger days. Starting each April at our monthly meetings we made plans to visit a native cemetery at least once a week until it got too cold for the very young and very old to make the trip, I started at age 6. This was a teaching trip about our culture and ceremonies. The leaders would walk the burial grounds after permission and with any elders of the area and pray for the departed, teaching about our belief and if necessary, repeat our crossing prayer at needed sites. Once I became that elder I would go to a burial grounds, with permission, while traveling to gatherings, powwows or visits. On one of my many visits to Pennsylvania, I would end up at the Carlisle Indian School cemetery? http://www.sachem-uncas.com/travels.html

I am trying to tell a story while being respectful to the families of those poor children at that school. In 1999 I found a historian from the area that helped explain to me why I could find no comfort while trying to pray at each stone. Unless push comes to shove it is suffice to say that I was able to have a ceremony with each child and no it was not at those stones!

This posting is something that I feel the need to write about because many days have gone by and no native has come forward with any interest in two past postings about a possible burial grounds in Texas, with the exception of the two young ladies that found the site and one of our Editors? Is there anyone out in Indian country willing to stop for a few minutes thinking about something other than themselves and at least agree to pray together? AHO

This is one of the few times that I hate being too old and too sick to drive!

Kinnick - Kinnick

Welcome to the visitor from the town of Hillsborough North Carolina

What is Kinnick, Kinnick?

Looking for information about our herbs called Kinnick - Kinnick.

Because I have covered this so many times and I did see that you were on one of my many postings, I was going to pass and go to the next question. However, while checking other answers that you were reading, this I must not do without a brief answer. Yes real tobacco grown as a plant is an herb and is included into this Kinnick - Kinnick, remember our tobacco as with all of our herbs is NEVER treated with chemicals and when we speak of smoking our pipes, it is always in a ceremony, not smoked like as in a cigarette or cigar? Most participants in our ceremonies will puff enough smoke a number of times to blow a prayer up towards Creator, down to Mother Earth and so on. Some of the participants will tap the pipe with their left hand and pass it on, a few very brave members might even inhale? I do not recommend this un necessary abuse on your body!

Native American allergies (2)

Native American allergies
02/25/2013
I am going to bring this up again because it keeps coming up on my trackers, so it is still a question.
Welcome to the visitor from Piney Flats Tennessee
Looking for information about Native American Allergies to my postings like this one Allergies in Indian country.
Yes, indigenous people of Native American/Indian country have a missing enzyme not needed until after first contact with Europeans.
As stated in past postings, the more European blood the less you need to worry about many allergies. On the other hand the less European blood?
