Native American birth ceremonies.

While this is what I can remember, this is a Matriarch society and women

(Clan Mothers)

are always in charge of family matters such as this one, men should be their helpers, if asked!

While in labor women usually gathered among themselves for the ritual of birth.

Birth ceremony usually started on the first moon after clan grandmother prayed and excepted that a new member is on the way.

Clan Grandmother, Clan Mother's and the soon to be mother would go off into the wooded area, collect special herbs for the ceremony, mix and make them ready for the Spiritual leader to be used soon after the birth.

A new mother to be would be assisted by her female relatives and the clan grandmothers.

Men were rarely allowed in at the time of the birth, sometimes this would be a blessing for the men.

In time both mother and baby would be separated from the people, this would also be a blessing for the new mother and baby, a little peace and quiet time.

13 days after this the child would be brought to the Spiritual leader too be introduced into the tribe by a birth ceremony.

The tribal clan Grandfather would appoint warriors to make the circle ready for the paw-paus new birth ceremony.

What is a traditional native prayer ceremony.

Another question asked today.

Easy answer is, every time an American Native prays, to that person, it is a traditional prayer.

An American Native can pray at a rock, tree, building, whatever, or pray in privacy however, every time we pray we know the it is a traditional talk with Creator.

Who were the first Native Americans?

Not the Indigenous people, native to the land.

In the 1800's, Political parties were formed, like the American Republicans and the Native Americans.

In 1835, the Native American Democratic Association.

The term "Native American" referred not to the continent's original peoples, but to native-born Protestants.

The indigenous people of this land were still treated as savages.

While growing up and able to make some elder meetings, if you were real quiet as I tried to be, one would often hear elders talking about their elders treatment as less than the animals.

The women of the house would feed her husband, then the children, the children already fed the animals, then she would feed the dog, if there was any left over, the slaves (African and native) could fight over it!

Why are cigarettes offered at a Native American funeral?

Smoking cigarettes like smallpox blankets, Jails (Reservations) and whisky has always been a European form of annihilation of our people.
At no time before first contact, did indigenous people smoke a chemical cigarette!
Yes it is true that many people call what we do while at a pipe ceremony "smoking a pipe" however, inside of this pipe, if one is a traditionalist, is very strong herbs (Kinnick, Kinnick) so we would not inhale that smoke!
So, what makes one think that they were passed around at our ceremonies?
Passing around chemical type cigarettes is the true oxymoron!
Death from a cigarette!
My ancestors were simple common sense people.
Their tobacco was grown without chemicals; the ancestors did not need them!
Today our elders know that cigarettes cause cancer, even if they smoke someone that they know and love has died a horrible death from this cancer.
Please do not insult them by an offering of a cancer causing cigarette.
Will you please use Kinnick~ Kinnick (herbs)?
The only thing worse than smoking chemicals would be smoking chemicals at a funeral!
Talk about an Enormous Oxymoron

Are Mohican people still around?

The Mohegan's and the Mohicans are still around.

The answer is "Yes" However, no thanks to the Dutch, Spanish, French,

English and the Mohawks!

The Mohawks, Dutch, Spanish English and French tried for many years to wipe them out.

The American government is trying to wipe them out by not recognizing them or assimilating them.

There are now many groups that were splinter to them that have come back from the dead to get casinos because they (The Mohicans's) have one.
