Children bring joy to prison powwows

If they can do this why can't we?

What does the BIA pride itself at saying?

566 recognized tribes in their Indian country, another 566 they and our government do not wish to recognize, why are they all not holding powwows and gatherings in jails and prisons throughout this country?

May 29--WALLA WALLA -- amid the sounds of powwow -- the drumming, the singing, the jingling of bells that accompany a dancer's, would be unremarkable anywhere else in Indian Country. But in the visitors' room at the Washington State Penitentiary? No smell of wood smoke and burning sage was absent, fire is not allowed inside the any prison, although it had all the same energy, excited greetings and he easy laughter of a powwow on the outside.

After the inmates had served their guests with traditional foods, Donald Carson began calling people one by one, handing out gifts that the men had made: hand drums, beadwork, moccasins, leather pouches.

The myths about our symbols, flag or staff, Part two

While writing about our flag, called the Sachem's Staff, I must write from my past teaching from our elders, now ancestors.

Like Old Glory, a Sachem's Staff is sacred to our people, so much so that it is never to be recorded or abused.

A blessing for Sachem.

The last time that I was able to enjoy the powwow trail we were at an Auburn University Student powwow many years ago.

The Head Veteran walked over, stood to be recognized then handed me tobacco, left hand to left hand and asked permission for my staff in the circle.

You all know me, the big bag of wind, I spent so much time explaining the history of my Great Grandfathers staff, while he stood in silence.

He then said "thank you Sachem, please walk my circle with me, we will make the circle worthy of grandfather".

That was the only hiccup of the day, make a circle worthy of Creator.

The next intermission we, every veteran in his group, walked my great grandfathers staff and my peoples POW~MIA Flag into the circle and set them in the East.

I am so proud of those students and that University and will never forget!

I am a proud citizen of the United States of America.

I am also a proud New England Native American descendent.

My ancestors also have a flag, or should I say, a symbol (Sachems Staff) for our people (Mohiingan) and our tribe.

This symbol was in use long before Old Glory of course because we were around long before the United States of America.

Yes, many other tribes have a Chiefs Staff, some now also have a flag?

For this reason it does not matter to my people where a flag must be at any time, because, our symbol as well as all of our ceremonies, should always be shown to the left.

So, if presented with other symbols from other countries it should never be a problem.

That was until this newer group of gatherings, loosely called powwows.

Everyone of the hundreds of Paw-paus that I have attended, all of the Sachem staff’s go into any Sacred Circle before Grand Entry and set in a place of honor, once set recordings are welcome.

This blog does not care where other tribes wish to place a flag or a staff because this blog is only here to teach you about my people?

I am no expert on other countries or tribes.

However, if you are at our gatherings, this blog now cares. Please respect our ways.

All for the powwows up until the early 1980’s, Sachems and guest Chief staff’s do the same, they go in before Grand Entry, Creator is always invited first and before the people. It is also easier at avoiding any recordings.

From the time soon after my Grandfather sent my cousin, his War Chief out west, we have also allowed flags, as long as they were presented properly to follow the staff’s at the beginning of Grand Entry.

We do not have a rodeo, circus or carnival, we always have a Paw-paus or the old fashion powwows and do so four times a year, so if you come to visit, all are always welcome, enjoy an old fashion Traditional Gathering of the People.

COSTUME or REGALIA?

4 Reasons a Redskins Name Change Should Not Bother You

By Kevin Ewoldt on Feb 8, 9:11a

Have you ever been reading a good story and something happens so your mind starts to drift away from the story? You want to keep reading the story to its conclusion, but your mind has other ideas.

So, what do you do?

This article did this to me, it was will planned out, it was saying what I wanted to hear. However, I just could not get past the reason why I started reading it in the first place.

This is the reason why writing about Native Americans should be written by a Native American, or at the very least after proof reading by one of us.

The name Red Skin is in fact offensive and the reason as to how the name came about is even more offensive.

However the author (Kevin Ewlodt) shot himself in the foot even before starting to write with something even more insulting to me then everything else that he wrote and I am betting that he does not know of this insult?

What we natives wear when not in our street cloths and at our gatherings is not a COSTUME it is called a REGALIA!

I know that to a non traditionalist that this sounds tribunal and after going to powwows these last few years, I can see the why of this confusion!

A costume is warn by a clown in a carnival or circus and in the last few years our gatherings and powwows have been a joke, caravel and a circus however wrong is wrong!

Part number two will try to explain why this is wrong?

Who is a Native American Gate Keeper

I understand your confusion my friend!
Welcome Miramar Florida

Native American Gate keeper?

Who is a Native American Gate Keeper?

It must once again be time for Snowbirds coming south for retirement?

This word (Gatekeeper) comes up many times so this time I will answer in my usual long winded posting?

Every once in a while I get questions this time of the year like this one.

Always remember that there was, is and will never be a Gatekeeper in a true traditional "Eastern Woodland" Native American Ceremony.

Today we have Arena directors?
Gatekeepers ?
and so on
in powwows in and around the east-coast?

In our ancestors time on Mother Earth in the New England Area, the leader was known as the Shechaim newer name (Sachem).

However, from the beginning this leader has always placed a

"Head Clan Mother"

in charge of tribal matters with discretion of course.

This Head Clan Mother often split the tribe into clans with at least one of her clan mothers at the head of that clan, depending on how large the tribe was?

In each clan would be a military person (Warrior), this person was always in charge of the entrance in the east of a circle,

and the west at Creators seat, (another posting)?

The word (Gatekeeper) is an occult word that came into far too many native tribes in the last 30 or so years.

The word Arena Director came in from rodeos, caravels and circus?

In the ancestors days on Mother Earth gathering were called Paw-Paus.

Followed by a word change to protect the Sacred Culture, of Pow-Wow.

A Warrior (Head Veteran) would be at the door of gathering inside an enclosure and in the east at Paw-paus and powwows.

An Elder Head Veteran is the person or persons that would stand guard at the opening of the village while warriors were away hunting of in battles.

The Head Veterans job is to, with the help from the Fire keeper and assistant, smudge, in the northeast with Kinnick-Kinnick, in the east coast areas, sage, herbs and sweet grass including Kinnick-Kinnick.

Next would be to lineup the Sacred Staff, flags and the dancers.

When all this is complete signal the MC to start Grand Entry.

A Head Veteran should not leave sight of the east incase dancers have questions without a back up like for instance the Fire keeper.

In a true traditional gathering, powwow, (Paw-paus), both must also keep the smudging, cleaning, clearing and the fire ongoing in the west.

Tobacco as a gift.

The question being asked the most today is still about tobacco, so we, the Native Americans answering that question are still not answering it well enough?

Tobacco used by my ancestors, Traditional Native Americans from New England was not Cigarettes, it was, it is, and should always be herbs found or grown by the Tribal Clan Grandmother with help from the Tribal Clan Mothers.

These herbs are called Kinnick. Kinnick ( our native word for tobacco).

This tobacco is used for anything sacred like, prayer, ceremonies like naming, funeral's, weddings, powwows, gatherings, pot luck, paw, paus and so on., gifting, cleansing us and the area around us.

I have many blogs and websites about our tobacco however, if my answers leaves you with more questions please Email me at sachemuncas at centurylink.net ( It is written this way to spoil spammers spiders.

Just to name a few.

My ancestors were simple common sense people.

Their tobacco was grown without chemicals, the ancestors did not need them!

Today our elders know that cigarettes cause cancer, even if they smoke, someone that they know and love has died a horrible death from this cancer.

Please do not insult them by an offering of a cancer causing cigarette.

Will you please use Kinnick~ Kinnick (herbs)?

I don't know is not the correct answer!

Vets in spotlight after flag fuss

This is the 2nd day in a row that this was in my Daily newspaper 1st time it was reprinted on their website.

It is getting extremely embarrassing to be in central Florida and be a Democrat.

What is the rules a leader must know before becoming a leader?

I don't know is not the correct answer!

THERESA CAMPBELL | Staff Writer

Local veterans who demanded the removal of an President Barack Obama flag from Lake County Democratic Headquarters in Tavares on Tuesday are finding themselves in the national spotlight.

I wish that these same veterans were around a few years ago when I was trying to stop an American flag flying with a picture of a warrior on it in Florida's so called powwows.

I could not ever get those veterans at Grant Entry to at least dip that flag while alongside of our American flag, so I did the next best thing, I walked away from Florida powwows.

Seaconke is a bird

Welcome to
Providence Rhode Island
Looking for the meaning of Seaconke bird
To one of my postings about Birds
Actually the word Seaconke when used by my elders now ancestors was about Sea Gulls however, it can also be used for any bird in flight like , Bats, Pelicans, Gulls, Owls and Eagles, not just birds of prey.
Birds. SakamiTori or (Bird of Prey)
The Traditional Eastern Woodland American Natives Ancestors around the New England area believed that ALL bird of Prey are our spiritual messengers and send from Creator for our protection.
One of the main reasons that I no longer help or have powwows or gatherings is because of the treatment of Birds of Prey in our modern gatherings.
One would need to get an invite to just one Paw-paus and see what I am talking about.
If, for instance, your gathering or powwow is stating a belief in an Eagle as your messenger to Grandfather (Creator).
Why do you allow this beautiful bird to be chained and forced into your entry (Arena as some are now calling it)?
In Florida there are "powwows" that abuse their Eagle each day of this "powwow"!
Whatever happened to Birds are our brothers and sisters?
Treat your sister like that, you go to jail!

7 requests since the last posting

Please read some before you ask?

7 requests about the following subject since the last posting and counting?

I have few ‘followers’ less ‘likes’ and fewer, if any ‘comments’ and I know that it is because of the following type of postings.

However, my promise to Creator and my elders was to help keep the ancestor’s words, culture and ceremonies available to our people and anyone wishing to learn our ways while also helping to protect ‘Mother Earth.

I know and love the land of my people,

New England, among others.

All of my blogs, post and the website, because of this love reflects this love of my people, my ancestors and the land because Creator made it all.

Yes, of course I love other people and lands.

However, this is narrowed down because of constant requests from others?

Please at least read the titles of some of my posting before you request my following your site?

I love the New England and New York area,
from diaper to retirement I have traveled the area in question thousands of times for meeting, gatherings, Paw-paus and powwows.

I know the people who love the area
and
I know the people who are
(Tricksters and pretender, because of their greed ‘Selfish Greed’)!

Evil spirits Coyote, Trickster and Powwows

If you follow and/or like to (feel the bern), this is your right as a citizen of this country.

However, as long as I live I will not ‘like’ or ‘follow’ your site, this is my right as a citizen of this country!

If nothing else please read this post?
Because, before I follow your site, I will be seeing the sites that you follow, constantly checking back when necessary, and if you do not like anyone I might wonder why?

I will never forget  his animalistic activists each time my president passed by one of this cowards group and because he beat himself they joined (it), now in the White house, nor will I allow anyone else to forget.

Grand Entry (our church).

Grand Entry

The Circle is the oldest symbol of the world.

Back before first contact we the American Natives from the Eastern woodland tribes had what we called a PAW-PAUS (church).

Because of first contact (threats of assimilation) and the lack of non native understanding our
ancestors changed the gathering and the name to Pow-Wow (meaning the wicked ones) which now allowed non natives into the circle!

Understand that Eastern woodland American natives wish for the same respect when it involves our Grand entry, and a precious few other dances?

No traditional elder wishes to be mean we have explained that most of our people attending this entry do so with many sacred medicines and or possessions some believe should
NOT  be recorded!

Please come and enjoy a traditional american gathering we, the elders, would love to teach and guide you through-out and will ever enjoy a dance or two with you.

To some native peoples of northeastern North America, a 'powwow' was originally a man with special abilities to cure or offer advice from the spirit world, a wizard, witch, and magician as explained earlier. Now everyone is welcome at Powwows!

At times there is an entry fee or donation to help pay for the drum, electricity, insurance and so on and you will often find a wide variety of American native crafts, trade goods and food for sale; even demonstrations and storytelling as well, most tribes are very poor.

It's a great place for your entire family to spend the day.

Drugs and alcohol are not permitted; pets must be on a leash at all times, like at a Paw-paus some powwows invite pets into a circle because Grandfather (Creator) is Creator of all!

The spiritual center or heart of a Powwow is THE CIRCLE; a place to be respected and honored, it is a sacred place that is blessed BY CREATOR through a spiritual leader.

The circle is entered only from the East (the opening) and dancers travel in the same direction as the sun.

The singing is a gift and prayer to the Creator; and the drum is the heartbeat of our People. The singers and drummers together are called THE DRUM.

Ceremonies start with a "Grand Entry" of the dancers to pay respects to our Creator and to greet one another. Honoring songs, and dances for veterans and our ancestors and a prayer follows. You will be asked to stand and remove your hat for these ceremonies if you can.

Please don't take photos or videos if you're asked not to do so; and please don't touch the clothing (Regalia) or personal belongings of anyone in American native dress.

Much of what is worn is sacred, expensive and irreplaceable, but do feel free to ask if you want to take individual pictures, or if you have a question about a particular item that someone is wearing.

Most traditional Native People will be pleased to assist you if they're asked first.

You will see many types of dances at a Powwow. When you hear a 'Round Dance' or sometimes it is called a friendship dance announced, EVERYONE will be invited to

participate, so proceed to the East of the circle and join in.

A Round (Friendship) dance is easy to learn and fun to do. AHO!

Fire-keeper

Welcome to my visitor from Pembroke Canada
To my website and blog looking for fire keepers and smudging.
Smudging the correct way.
Smudging
Smudging
Smudging has just been covered the other day,
Smudging before entering the circle September 28, 2013
However Fire Keeper has not been covered.
Fire Keeper is the reason why I have been holding onto this for a little while and praying about it before answering.
I do that a lot because I want to get it right with my ancestors and Creator before teaching.
We must once again understand that my teachers were from around New York, New England and parts Southeast.
While it is true that my father Shechaim Zeak and my grandfather Shechaim Tallfox had many visitors to our meetings, I have no knowledge of the Canadian natives Fire Keepers and their ceremony, never had the opportunity to witness?
Also, since I am writing on a blog being read by people from all over Indian country, Native American country and the world, I feel that it is necessary to point out that fact.
I have also been to thousands of gatherings around Indian country and have noticed that most gatherings do not have a fire; some have a fire almost as an afterthought and a few have a fire along the lines of our Paw-paus gatherings.
It is this last that I chose to write about.
My people take a fire in or around a circle very personal.
You see, we believe that a correctly placed fire at the correct time is a sign that Kiehtan (Creator) has agreed to a visit with our gathering.
The original powwows before first contact (Paw-paus) the fire was always off to the west side away from distractions with room to do our smudging/prayers.
In those days smudging was with Kinnick – Kinnick Herbs, this is our tobacco.
Never, never, never use any chemical smoking tobacco, never!
Our powwows, not counting today's intertribal where the fire is placed into the center of our circle.
Long before any gathering begins the cleaning and clearing must be done.
After the circle is cleaned and cleared correctly it is time to smudge.
Remember; just as most tribal ancestors from southern areas, and as with our Paw-paus, you start the smudging at the center starting in the east, north, west, south and back to east, step wards toward the east two or three feet until the circle is smudges at the east.
Also remember that this is speaking ‘Intertribal’ because all ‘Sacred Circles are over west of a circle.
Taking the remains of the last fire and mixing it with Kinnick, Kinnick we start the spirit smudging, light the fire in the center of the circle.
Light the mix from the fire in the circle, extremely important, let the fire in the circle go out on its own.
Smudge starting at the east at the fire, smudge around and back to the east, take two steps toward the east opening and smudge around the fire once again back to the east each time getting closer to the east opening and out through your opening.
This way all spirits good and bad will be forced out the opening of your circle.
Good spirits will return with Kiehtan.
Your circle is now ready for the Firekeeper prayers for a blessing from Kiehtan and a visit.

After the fire is started (another posting) the Firekeeper and assistants must keep the fire going for the length of the Paw-paus or powwow.

What is this thing called PAW~PAUS?

Why can't this thing be found all over the internet?

It must be one of those secret sacred ceremonies Sachem keeps talking about?

NO.

It is not a secret sacred ceremony.

It is however, a ceremony and very much alive today.

It is a vessel (ceremony) used four times a year, sometime even more often, by the ancestors into which many of our Sacred Ceremonies are enjoyed.

The only reason why one, until after this posting, cannot find information about this ceremony is simple.

No phony, wannabe, impersonator has been able to steal enough information in order to fool the masses, plus you cannot make money off of it.

P.S.

It is only polite to ask before taking information from someone's  website or blog?

Ask my WordPress friends, we all enjoy re blogging and someday even I might get it right?

Back before first contact before the Europeans made it necessary for the people to change the gatherings, the first people around the East Coast held our gathering call a Paw-paus.

Our gatherings are what today's powwows started out looking like believe it or not, only with no Sacred Ceremonies in them without a special invitation.

Sorry to say that not much in today's powwow’s look anything like a Paw-paus.

Paw-paus

No fence marking off the circle, no charge ever to entry the grounds.

No Arena Director because it has no arena, no keeper of a gate. It has a circle, cleaned and cleared always with the intent of an invitation to Creator for a blessing and a dance or two.

Food venders were always welcome as long as they provided their own power and could prove that the food was tasty and safe to the consumers, yes, they do charge.

All venders knew before traveling that this is a gathering of the people and that anyone wishing to could provide a dish and if they wish a small gift for the share blanket.

No one sold things unless they could prove that it was made by hand and by our people from around Indian country.

Even if this vender was with or without a government plastic card.

The Paw-paus was usually held on someone from the tribe's land or permission from a sponsor to use their land, so many did have a donation bucket, drop into or if need be take from?

As stated above, many time all of our Sacred Ceremonies, even a Crossing once in a while, were held in a Paw-Paus.

Soon after first contact, because the Europeans were starting to get extremely pushy at wanting into this very spiritual event.

Sachem’s of the New England tribes came together to find a fast safe way out of this situation.

Long before this first contact our ancestors knew of an evil Shaman warlock that practice Shamanism.

This Shaman warlock name was known to the people as powwow and was an extremely evil wicked spirit.

The Sachem’s of these true American native people placed the problem where they knew that they would get an answer.

In the hands of their clan mothers.

After many debates about the problem the clan mothers came up with, why not use the name powwow and a great explanation as to why it should be used.

It would seem that our invaders from across the waters acted very much like this Sharman powwow.

So why not start having an event like our paw-paus and invite them all?

The problem day that was unforeseen by our ancestor is now many of these powwows are infested with shamans, witches and warlocks, some even running it!

This would be a very good reason to explain why no American native advertises when and where we are holding our Paw-paus and why it is still so hard to get information.

The Meaning of the word Aquine?

Rio De Janeiro Rio de Janeiro Brazil
AQUINE (Peace to you
Welcome to the visitor to some of my teaching websites and blog postings looking for answers to their questions about
Aquine
The Meaning of Aquine
This is just one of our extremely old words used often by my elders, now ancestors,
while attending gatherings, meetings, powwows and paw-Paus back while growing up in Uncasvillage.
WE are pleased to be able to teach as much as possible about our traditional ancestors.
As you may or may not see while traveling around the internet,
some teaching about our people will not compute with what the elders taught as the truth.
Many times often taught by non native people or not from our tribe!
