Mohawk Hairstyle

Native American Boy Pulled From Class Over Mohawk Hairstyle

"To ostracize him like that -- that's stuff from the '50s."

Talk about keeping the culture, I love this young man!

Wonder how many adults wear some type of religious trinket to let people know their beliefs?

The Seneca Nation (Tribe) are relations of my people and we, tah and I, have been too many gathering and powwows on their grounds for years.

If you, see a native person in New England and/or New York and they are stating that they are of a tribe in the area only they do not have this young brave Kobe's hairstyle, you should ask why?

Just to hear the answer?

Don't get me wrong, the style in today's world is not mandatory because of the lack of forest.

I prefer not too now because we are retired to Florida and I would be spending time and time again explaining however, I am not in New England.

All of our ancestors had Kobe Sandens hairstyle or something very close to it because the land was bush and tree popular!

It was said many times by our first visitors to the area that one could walk from one side of the state or states on tree tops.

A young Native American student in Utah is back in class after school staff sent him to the office claiming his Mohawk hairstyle violated school policy.

“They wanted Kobe to come home until we cut his hair,” Gary Sanden, the father of 7-year-old Jakobe Sanden, told the Salt Lake Tribune. “That’s who he is. That’s part of his culture.”

Gary Sanden is a member of the Seneca Nation and his wife, Teyawwna Sanden, is a member of the Kaibab Band of Paiutes Indians, Fox 13 reported.

Their son was kicked out of his second-grade class at Arrowhead Elementary School in the city of Santa Clara on Monday after showing up sporting the haircut he got the previous Friday. Administrators called Jakobe's parents to tell them the boy's hairstyle violated school policy and he needed to change it, Gary Sanden told The Washington Post.

The school’s online handbook does not mention any specific hairstyles, The Post pointed out, but simply states that “extremes in body piercings, hair styles and hair colors may be considered a distraction or disruption.”

“We had the students that weren’t used to it,” Arrowhead Principal Susan Harrah told Fox 13. “They had called that out. So the teacher brought the student to my attention.”

School officials initially asked Teyawwna Sanden to pick up her son and change his hair, Gary Sanden told news station WFAA. Both parents offered to bring in their tribal membership cards to prove their heritage, but the school said they needed documentation from a tribal leader.

The couple got Seneca Nation Councillor William Canella to write to the superintendent.

“It is common for Seneca boys to wear a Mohawk because after years of discrimination and oppression, they are proud to share who they are," Canella wrote.

The boy was never sent home or suspended, Assistant Principal Rex Wilkey told the Washington Post. Principal Harrah told the Tribune she felt the school handled the manner respectfully and efficiently, noting, “It took about a half hour of my time.”

But Gary Sanden said the school's handling of the situation felt discriminatory and having Jakobe spend part of the day in the principal’s office over his hairstyle was bad enough.

"To ostracize him like that -- that's stuff from the '50s,” Sanden told the Tribune.

Wannabe Tribe

Welcome Gloucester Massachusetts
To one of our postings about those pesky Wannabes?
Wannabe Native Americans

I for one do not know of a real life Traditional Wannabe Tribe, the closest I can come would be the Boy Scouts of America, not real natives, and a group up in northeastern Canada?

A wannabe, not to be confused with the many real tribes through-out Indian country that this government, for fear of the need to pay for the land that it stole and ignored by a hand full of stuck up "Tribal Nations."

Still not sure why the need for a change from tribe to nation?
Wannabe.

A person that tries to convince others to believe that he/she has native blood.

In other words a fake!

Tahtonka and I have been all over your state at gatherings, powwows and meetings however, we have been retired to Florida for years.

However, this should have nothing to do with discovering your wannabe tribe just ask many questions and the truth will show itself?

Never fear, we are only a website away.
If this did not answer your question, please write?
I like it when you write comments.
I love it when you have question.
Hope that this is of some help to you?
If not just write?

What is a Wannabe Indian Follower?

Welcome to my visitor from Uncasville Connecticut
Your confusing statement and an answer to your question.

(I need to keep writing both 'followers and friends' because I must remind myself of the many follower, over (500) that only they know why, just keep following? And the few friends that keep in touch or like the postings?)

As I just wrote to one of my long time friends, Follower/Friends Angie (Kentucky Angel).

I started back in the early 1980's writing in DOS trying to keep my elders and ancestors alive in the hearts and minds of the Mohiigan Family because we could see that we were losing touch and or passing on (Crossing Ceremony) far too fast.

I had an old 4 MB computer and writing on Netscape and EarthLink in dial up!

:-(

Years later with a new computer I was able to get a tracker to help find and answer questions from family and friends.

While checking the tracker I noticed that many others were asking the same question and many other questions?

So I started answering as best I could and that the time I even had elders to check with first.

I discovered that even though I had family and friends following the website, I also had over 3,000 un-known followers?

I also noticed that I recognized most of them as greedy, phony, "Non-Indians!"

We call (Wannabe Indians)!

Because of our many years out on the powwow trail I discovered that most of my followers were from different gatherings and powwows through-out Indian Country.

People that just sold junk, or store bought trinkets and clothing made outside of this country?

Back then no one would be allowed at a traditional native gathering selling non native material!

Today the non native material is the normal and native made is the rarely found idem!

To make matters worse, just about all of them were also 'selling' Naming, Weddings, Burial (as in Funeral) as so on, Ceremonies!

As my close followers know, selling a Sacred-Ceremony is against the teachings of our ancestors and frowned on by Kiehtan!

After also learning how to dump these Crooked Wannabes, thanks also to a long time followers, (Pacific Paratrooper).

I felt the need to write, where or when necessary, Friends/Followers?

So, I am able to keep my followers down to people that really wish to read and/or learn about our traditional tribe?

P.S.

Any tribal person in and around Connecticut should already have known this?

Great question by one of my long time readers

Another Great question by one of my long time readers

Thank-you for your question because as you all know, I am stumbling along as best I can and when and for sure I will, I leave questions,

I count it a blessing when anyone has a question to clear thing up, you asks?

After all remember, I would also have many questions of interest about your culture, as will I should?

As I explained to a few of my faithful readers this morning, we are following doctors directions with the love of our lives "Breanna," (prayers requested), doing what we can until Tuesday at her doctors or sooner so we are not on the computer much lately.

Now as for the question, thank-you for your help and the question.
Remember and this is extremely important.
"The post is about a "Sacred Circle,"

it is also important for me to now once again remind you that,

"the only dumb question is the one that you think of but do not ask!"

If one has any questions about my posting it is always my fault and never yours because it is my culture and my responsibility to explain completely, something that is still hard for me!

I want everyone to know that Florida as well as many states do have many "powwows" the question was once again,

"Sacred Circle?"

In this state (powwow, gatherings and meetings) like in most others are not with a Sacred Circle and this is OK.

I am always writing to protect my readers from phony wannabes just looking into your pockets with what they want one to believe is a sacred culture as in a Sacred Circle?

As stated earlier this was a Great Question!

This is why I try to always state that my answers are from my constant pestering at the knees of my elders now ancestors starting from around age 5 or 6.

What is the protocol of smudging a late person at a pow-wow

Welcome New York

To our smudging site at

Looking for

What is the protocol of smudging a late person at a pow wow

Before we get into your question with an answer from people in and around your area, I must correct a few things found in Wikipedia?

According to our ancestors around New York and New England that came to my grandfathers monthly meetings for many years, the person that gave this information to Wikipedia has made a few mistakes?

Their answer?

A pow wow (also powwow, pow-wow or pau wau is a gathering of some of North America's Native people.

The word derives from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning "spiritual leader".

Our answer!

First, also according to the ancestors, the Narragansett's are a tribe that came down from another country many years ago.

Therefore not a true traditional New England Tribe.

So, the word Pow-wow (Paw-Paus) in tribes around our area, New York/New England, call the Demon Spirit "Pow-wow" not a Spiritual Leader!"

AND

This is why I say in my posting answers, "it depends on the area of a tribe?

AND

The protocol of smudging a late person at a pow-wow is up to the Head Veteran and how late?

A true traditional Head Veteran will smudge you, if you ask, no matter when you wish to be smudged?

"If not the Shechaim Ohjieshan will."

Evil Powwow

Welcome Calgary Alberta Canada

Looking for information on evil powwow

I must once again start with my two sites, the ones that you clicked on, are about my people, the Native Americans along the east coast of Indian country, far from your area in Canada so the culture and ceremonies may differ some, for instance, the lord of the evil’s in the time of my ancestors and still around this day as a matter of fact, is known as Powwow, so my answer would have to depend on, do you want to know about this evil spirit or are you asking about someone’s bad gathering (powwow)?

I have been to many, far too many lately, evil or just plain bad gatherings, that’s another story for another day however, have not as yet had the opportunity to visit your area so I will write about this Powwow Spirit but first, no spirit good or bad can control you if you are always in contact (prayer) with your Creator.

This spirit is a giant even among to giants of old and caused much pain and suffering, almost ended our people except for Kiehtan intervention.

Evil spirits Coyote, Trickster and Powwows

A little side note, after first contact and the abuse of our ceremonies, our people and our culture from the invaders (USA) our leaders, Shechaim (leader), Head Clan Mothers and elders changed the name of our gathering from Paw-paus to Pow-wow and invited the evil invaders to join in on this phony gathering just to please them and now hold our Sacred Ceremonies in peace.

American Indians with Blonde hair?

Boy does this bring back old wounds from past memories.

How many hundreds of times, or in my case thousands, did you go to powwows in the east and see dancers dressed in European cloth and stating that this is their Regalia?

REALLY?

To think about how many times people from the Plains Indian area would show at our gatherings in the east and carefully explain to us and our white European friends,

"why we cannot be real full bloods"!

Our skin is not dark enough, some of us have light color hair, some even blonde!

Remember that my grandfather, father and I along with some really traditional people, both men and women from all around the eastern tribes were the heads of this group of people being told that we could not be real natives?

 Today is

(Vindication Day)

Scientist through DNA is showing that Light Skin and Blonde Hair may have, in fact, started in this country, in the Dakota's Area!

So, I am guessing that all of those intruders into our gatherings from the west are, in fact, not Full Bloods?

Because they have dark skin and black hair!

Native Americans, Europeans share close ties: research http://www.chinapost.com.tw/life/discover/2013/11/23/394287/Native-Americans.htm

Is it possible that two distinct peoples crossed the land bridge separately and met up in North America?

Several tribes living in what is now the United States, most notably the Mandan tribe that is native to the Dakotas, had strikingly European-looking features, including blond hair, when they were first met by French traders in the 18th century.

Graf said the new finding shows that those “European” traits are actually native to those tribes.

“What this study is telling us is that those European-looking signatures, those features, came with them over the land bridge from Siberia, and were present in people who lived in Siberia 24,000 years ago,” she said.

The migration paths that may have brought people across the Bering Strait Land Bridge.

European Roots for Native Americans?

This is funny if one thinks about it?

I have been to hundreds of gatherings, powwows, pot lucks, and monthly meetings since age 6 until Grandfather Kiehtan takes me home that are put on by native American tribes not able to receive help from this government because they could not jump through enough hoops to qualify.

This foreigner comes to our country (New Mexico) stating that this one drop of DNA from a Siberian clan member shows that our people may or may not come from Eastern Siberian and may or may not come from West Siberian or Eastern Europe and he gets his name in the papers?

Just to be clear and that you understand and the DNA expert (Eske Willerslev, a University of Copenhagen) knows.

My ancestors never stated in their story telling anything about where our people came from before crossing the Bering Land Bridge.

Nor did they state that our decedents were also Vikings only the direction our ancestors came from, modern science placed the directions to and from.

An analysis of ancient DNA from a 24,000-year-old Siberian skeleton generates a new model for the original peopling of the Western Hemisphere.

Native Americans may not have descended from East Asians who crossed the Bering Land Bridge more than 15,000 years ago, according to a new genomic analysis of a millennia-old Siberian skeleton.

A portion of the nuclear DNA recovered from the upper arm bone of a 4-year-old boy that was buried near the Siberian village of Mal’ta about 24,000 years ago is shared by modern Native Americans and no other group.

But the boy appears to have been descended from people of European or western Asian origin.

One boy does not make for a super scientific discovery, at least it did not while I was in school?

While we are on this subject, Siberian people use Round Houses.

Our people use Round Houses?

There homes are anchored down with boulders’ because of their weather.

Ours are built started by using trees still growing in the ground?

I also believe but cannot prove that both the Siberian village and our people came from around Asia?

Keeper of the Fire After Grand Entry

Assuming that the fire is now started and Grand Entry, Flag song, Veterans honor and so forth are now going on.

Fire Keeper, not to be confused with the Keeper of the Circle unless one person is assigned to do both, now becomes an invisible, for lack of an English word, fire feeder, to me the most important job or job of joy during the gathering, sitting with Kiehtan?

If everything from my last posting is completed correctly and we are talking Paw paus and some earlier powwows, your circle is now ready for the Firekeeper prayers for a blessing from Kiehtan and a visit.

Firekeeper/Keeper of the Circle

Kiehtan has come to visit with the people so the Firekeeper and assistants must keep the fire going for the length of the Paw-paus or powwow.

The first thing we must understand before going any further would be that only Creator can bless anyone or anything, I cannot emphasize this enough times!

Only Creator (Kiehtan) can bless.

Blessings come down to Mother Earth, never up from her or any creations!

If the smudging of the circle is done correctly you should feel a peace of mind and a need to fellowship while in your circle.

Remember the bucket of shame at the east from the last posting?

You were asked, if you wanted, to put all bad thoughts into this bucket and Kiehtan removed them so now stand by for your blessing, if you are a believer?

My three favorite words are “Before first contact.”

Paw-paus fire, as stated in earlier postings is at the west out on the grounds someplace convenient so now smudging can commence without disturbing dancers and attendants.

For many years after this first contact the fire was also in the west because as you may know if you have been to these newer age gatherings, the East is clogged up for far too long while the head veteran is lining up the flags and veterans, dancers are making ready to enter and many others are standing around in the way waiting for their time to be smudged.

This cannot look good to outsider visitors?

Fire-keeper

Welcome to my visitor from Pembroke Canada
To my website and blog looking for fire keepers and smudging.
Smudging the correct way.
Smudging
Smudging
Smudging has just been covered the other day,
Smudging before entering the circle September 28, 2013
However Fire Keeper has not been covered.
Fire Keeper is the reason why I have been holding onto this for a little while and praying about it before answering.
I do that a lot because I want to get it right with my ancestors and Creator before teaching.
We must once again understand that my teachers were from around New York, New England and parts Southeast.
While it is true that my father Shechaim Zeak and my grandfather Shechaim Tallfox had many visitors to our meetings, I have no knowledge of the Canadian natives Fire Keepers and their ceremony, never had the opportunity to witness?
Also, since I am writing on a blog being read by people from all over Indian country, Native American country and the world, I feel that it is necessary to point out that fact.
I have also been to thousands of gatherings around Indian country and have noticed that most gatherings do not have a fire; some have a fire almost as an afterthought and a few have a fire along the lines of our Paw-paus gatherings.
It is this last that I chose to write about.
My people take a fire in or around a circle very personal.
You see, we believe that a correctly placed fire at the correct time is a sign that Kiehtan (Creator) has agreed to a visit with our gathering.
The original powwows before first contact (Paw-paus) the fire was always off to the west side away from distractions with room to do our smudging/prayers.
In those days smudging was with Kinnick – Kinnick Herbs, this is our tobacco.
Never, never, never use any chemical smoking tobacco, never!
Our powwows, not counting today's intertribal where the fire is placed into the center of our circle.
Long before any gathering begins the cleaning and clearing must be done.
After the circle is cleaned and cleared correctly it is time to smudge.
Remember; just as most tribal ancestors from southern areas, and as with our Paw-paus, you start the smudging at the center starting in the east, north, west, south and back to east, step wards toward the east two or three feet until the circle is smudges at the east.
Also remember that this is speaking ‘Intertribal’ because all ‘Sacred Circles are over west of a circle.
Taking the remains of the last fire and mixing it with Kinnick, Kinnick we start the spirit smudging, light the fire in the center of the circle.
Light the mix from the fire in the circle, extremely important, let the fire in the circle go out on its own.
Smudge starting at the east at the fire, smudge around and back to the east, take two steps toward the east opening and smudge around the fire once again back to the east each time getting closer to the east opening and out through your opening.
This way all spirits good and bad will be forced out the opening of your circle.
Good spirits will return with Kiehtan.
Your circle is now ready for the Firekeeper prayers for a blessing from Kiehtan and a visit.

After the fire is started (another posting) the Firekeeper and assistants must keep the fire going for the length of the Paw-paus or powwow.

Smudging before entering the circle

Welcome to my visitor from

Orono Maine

Looking of information about smudging before entering the circle.

To one of my many websites and blogs about smudging.

As you might feel by now, smudging is almost being written to death.

Smudging the correct way

However, if you have ever been to my trackers you would see that questions keep coming and many answers keep getting it wrong.

We must not forget that smudging, as beautiful and important as it might be, is still just another form of prayer to our Supreme Being, Kiehtan (Creator) for something?

We have been in your town many time with my Uncle Russ (Chief Rolling Thunder) on the way to his reservation.

One of our many trips.

I spent time in town while on our way to Clan Mother Nettie Smith's Crossing Ceremony some years ago now.

Orono is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States.

It was first settled in 1774 and named in honor of Chief Joseph Orono of the Penobscot Nation.

It is home to The University of Maine.

Smudging the correct way

Again, remember prayers as with this smudging, are our way to get us in a place where we try to blank out the world for a talk with our Supreme Being, no matter what God we might be on our knees before?

The original powwows before first contact (Paw-paus) were always off to the west away from distractions with room to do our smudging, in those days smudging was with Kinnick - Kinnick Herbs, our tobacco.

The myths about our symbols, flag or staff, Part two

While writing about our flag, called the Sachem's Staff, I must write from my past teaching from our elders, now ancestors.

Like Old Glory, a Sachem's Staff is sacred to our people, so much so that it is never to be recorded or abused.

A blessing for Sachem.

The last time that I was able to enjoy the powwow trail we were at an Auburn University Student powwow many years ago.

The Head Veteran walked over, stood to be recognized then handed me tobacco, left hand to left hand and asked permission for my staff in the circle.

You all know me, the big bag of wind, I spent so much time explaining the history of my Great Grandfathers staff, while he stood in silence.

He then said "thank you Sachem, please walk my circle with me, we will make the circle worthy of grandfather".

That was the only hiccup of the day, make a circle worthy of Creator.

The next intermission we, every veteran in his group, walked my great grandfathers staff and my peoples POW~MIA Flag into the circle and set them in the East.

I am so proud of those students and that University and will never forget!

I am a proud citizen of the United States of America.

I am also a proud New England Native American descendent.

My ancestors also have a flag, or should I say, a symbol (Sachems Staff) for our people (Mohiingan) and our tribe.

This symbol was in use long before Old Glory of course because we were around long before the United States of America.

Yes, many other tribes have a Chiefs Staff, some now also have a flag?

For this reason it does not matter to my people where a flag must be at any time, because, our symbol as well as all of our ceremonies, should always be shown to the left.

So, if presented with other symbols from other countries it should never be a problem.

That was until this newer group of gatherings, loosely called powwows.

Everyone of the hundreds of Paw-paus that I have attended, all of the Sachem staff’s go into any Sacred Circle before Grand Entry and set in a place of honor, once set recordings are welcome.

This blog does not care where other tribes wish to place a flag or a staff because this blog is only here to teach you about my people?

I am no expert on other countries or tribes.

However, if you are at our gatherings, this blog now cares. Please respect our ways.

All for the powwows up until the early 1980’s, Sachems and guest Chief staff’s do the same, they go in before Grand Entry, Creator is always invited first and before the people. It is also easier at avoiding any recordings.

From the time soon after my Grandfather sent my cousin, his War Chief out west, we have also allowed flags, as long as they were presented properly to follow the staff’s at the beginning of Grand Entry.

We do not have a rodeo, circus or carnival, we always have a Paw-paus or the old fashion powwows and do so four times a year, so if you come to visit, all are always welcome, enjoy an old fashion Traditional Gathering of the People.

What is this thing called PAW~PAUS?

Why can't this thing be found all over the internet?

It must be one of those secret sacred ceremonies Sachem keeps talking about?

NO.

It is not a secret sacred ceremony.

It is however, a ceremony and very much alive today.

It is a vessel (ceremony) used four times a year, sometime even more often, by the ancestors into which many of our Sacred Ceremonies are enjoyed.

The only reason why one, until after this posting, cannot find information about this ceremony is simple.

No phony, wannabe, impersonator has been able to steal enough information in order to fool the masses, plus you cannot make money off of it.

P.S.

It is only polite to ask before taking information from someone's  website or blog?

Ask my WordPress friends, we all enjoy re blogging and someday even I might get it right?

Back before first contact before the Europeans made it necessary for the people to change the gatherings, the first people around the East Coast held our gathering call a Paw-paus.

Our gatherings are what today's powwows started out looking like believe it or not, only with no Sacred Ceremonies in them without a special invitation.

Sorry to say that not much in today's powwow’s look anything like a Paw-paus.

Paw-paus

No fence marking off the circle, no charge ever to entry the grounds.

No Arena Director because it has no arena, no keeper of a gate. It has a circle, cleaned and cleared always with the intent of an invitation to Creator for a blessing and a dance or two.

Food venders were always welcome as long as they provided their own power and could prove that the food was tasty and safe to the consumers, yes, they do charge.

All venders knew before traveling that this is a gathering of the people and that anyone wishing to could provide a dish and if they wish a small gift for the share blanket.

No one sold things unless they could prove that it was made by hand and by our people from around Indian country.

Even if this vender was with or without a government plastic card.

The Paw-paus was usually held on someone from the tribe's land or permission from a sponsor to use their land, so many did have a donation bucket, drop into or if need be take from?

As stated above, many time all of our Sacred Ceremonies, even a Crossing once in a while, were held in a Paw-Paus.

Soon after first contact, because the Europeans were starting to get extremely pushy at wanting into this very spiritual event.

Sachem’s of the New England tribes came together to find a fast safe way out of this situation.

Long before this first contact our ancestors knew of an evil Shaman warlock that practice Shamanism.

This Shaman warlock name was known to the people as powwow and was an extremely evil wicked spirit.

The Sachem’s of these true American native people placed the problem where they knew that they would get an answer.

In the hands of their clan mothers.

After many debates about the problem the clan mothers came up with, why not use the name powwow and a great explanation as to why it should be used.

It would seem that our invaders from across the waters acted very much like this Sharman powwow.

So why not start having an event like our paw-paus and invite them all?

The problem day that was unforeseen by our ancestor is now many of these powwows are infested with shamans, witches and warlocks, some even running it!

This would be a very good reason to explain why no American native advertises when and where we are holding our Paw-paus and why it is still so hard to get information.
